Web training will help you keep your head above the water

Website training in Content Management Solutions and Dreamweaver

Kiswebs offer different types of website training, but primarily we focus on 2 areas. 1. Macromedia Dreamweaver training, 2. Website content management training. We will look at them both and expand a little on the benefits of them and perhaps any downsides to them.

Website training using Macromedia Dreamweaver ( Adobe )

Without a doubt the industry leader in web creation software was Macromedia - I say was, because Macromedia was bought by Adobe. The Macromedia product Dreamweaver is the industry standard for web developers to use and as such is one we focus on when doing website training with our clients.

Unlike conventional training courses though we do NOT train you on everything that Dreamweaver can do - this would take a considerable amount of time, not to mention your money, and would perhaps be a bit much for a lot of people to take on board. Instead we train you on YOUR website, making the types of changes you would typically be expecting to do.

You come to our office, away from your daily grind, and we spend a 3 hour training session for up to 3 people in your organisation. Within this 3 hour period you are trained on how to do the basics, such as; create a new web page, make text changes, format text, insert, delete, or size images, create links to internal pages or external websites, link to email addresses, change meta tag information, and upload changes to the internet using the FTP ( File Transfer Protocol ) within Macromedia Dreamweaver. The only prerequisite for the training is that delegates have basic word processing skills.

For most clients one 3 hour training session is enough, although additional web training sessions can be scheduled if required.

Possible downside to training using Macromedia Dreamweaver

There are one or two possible downsides of training people to use Macromedia Dreamweaver to make changes to your website. If they do not use the software on a regular basis then they may forget certain things. Whilst it is easy to use, it is like any other piece of software and without regular use you may forget were certain things are.

Another possible downside is that if the person or people trained to use the software leave your business then they take with them the skills and your business is left without the ability to make changes to your website. This is were a Content Management Solution is much more preferable for most businesses as anyone can use it.

Website training using Content Management Solution

Website training using a content management solution that we have designed and developed specifically for our client is the main way we train clients - moreso than Macromedia Dreamweaver training. It all gets down to factoring in that the client will be doing their own website updates at the project outset and making sure that the website front end is developed and designed in such a way that will allow for this to happen easily.

The main benefit is that we develop the content management solution in such a way that anyone with basic word processing skills can make the changes to the website assuming the administrator has given them access rights to the areas that need changing.

Areas that we train you on using your Content Management Solution

First of all there can be a super administrator who controls all areas of the website and determines which access rights to give to who. We train this person or people on how to setup new users and how to limit their admin rights to certain areas or all areas depending on what is appropriate.

We then train the relevant people on how to create new pages by simply selecting on a few areas and typing in a few words. The change is immediate on the website but we also allow a hide facility so that any web page can be hidden whilst the page is being created. Similarly we train you on how to add a variety of differing content such as; text and images, uploading PDF's, Excel spreadsheets, Word Documents, Powerpoint presentations. We train you on how to create pages specific to; useful links, downloads, news and archived news, form pages.

Your business specific Content Management Solution functionality

The above functions we train you in are all fairly standard across most websites but there may be more one of type of functionality that is unique to your needs. Recently we created a function that allowed a business to keep track of what their sales reps were doing. So we trained the sales reps on how to enter their information for that day from their remote location so that the business owner could keep track of what was going on and reply to any comments submitted by the sales reps. Importantly we determine at project outset what the expected outcomes are and device an appropriate training schedule that will allow for your outcomes to be achieved.

Web Tips: Web Training - What is right for you ?

The main thing at the outset of your website design project is to determine what control you wish over your website.

Do you need to make changes regularly ? If so - should you be making changes to your HTML pages using a product such as Macromedia Dreamweaver or should you have a Content Management Solution built onto your website that will allow you to simply make changes from anywhere in the world ( assuming you have an internet connection )

Our thinking is this. There are 3 things to take into consideration at the same time.

1. Are you a small or large business ?
2. Is your website small or large and simple or complex ?
3. Will your budget allow for a content management solution ?

If you are a small business with a simple website and you would like to make changes yourself then using a product like Macromedia Dreamweaver is perhaps the sensible route to take. It is unlikely that you would leave the business therefore the skills you get from your Dreamweaver training will stay with the business. So perhaps you do not need to have a Content Management Solution developed for you.

However - you may be a small or large business with a large complex website, with multi functions and complexities throughout - in which case getting a Content Management Solution would probably be the way to go as it will be much easier and less time consuming than the Dreamweaver training.
